Glee Set Visit: It's Regionals!

(SPOILER-FREE SEASON FINALE SET VISIT REPORT)

A few hundred lucky Glee fans got a rare treat yesterday: visiting the set of the hit Fox series and acting as the audience for the taping of the season finale, entitled "Regionals."

I was one of them. (Yes, my life is charmed. I was lucky to be chosen.)

Me with Cory Monteith (@frankenteen),
who plays Finn Hudson on Glee.

When we arrived for our 3:30 p.m. call time, the fan line wrapped around the building. After signing the photo release, handing in their cell phones, and getting magged, fans shuffled up to the balcony of the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills.

I was lucky enough to get on the Fox Friends & Family list. That, coupled with the recent (as in last week) hysterectomy and lack of desire to climb so many stairs, got my mom and I seats downstairs in the orchestra. (Charmed x2. Check.)

The theatre was pretty much empty when we arrived, as the cast and crew were on lunch. Well, mostly empty. The back five or so rows were filled with inflatable mannequins (a cheaper option than filling in seats with people. They're normally used in large crowd shots, like for the key race scenes in Seabiscuit.)

Me and my background BFF. She was kind of an
airhead. They removed her for the close-up shots.

We settled into our seats in the back half of the theatre, and watched as it slowly began filling with crew and actors. It became apparent this scene was Vocal Adrenaline's performance at Regionals. About halfway through the shoot, they brought in hundreds of background folks to fill in the orchestra.

We thought for sure they'd re-seat us to move us out of camera view, but nope! We were only one seat off the center aisle, so we think we may have made it into a shot or two. (Charmed x3. Check.)

My review of the Vocal Adrenaline number: It. Was. Sick.

Vocal Adrenaline stretching and taking
their places for the Regionals number.

Since I promised a spoiler-free review, I won't say who was or wasn't performing (i.e., Jesse St. James) or which song they (or New Directions) sang. I'll just say that all the songs chosen were perfect for the story they wanted to tell, and the cast sang their collective asses off.

(Though it still slays me that they use the freaking auto-tuner. The cast sounds great on their own. Die, auto-tuner, die!)

The choreographer's vision for Vocal Adrenaline was amazing, and the dancers tore right through it. So much so, that one of the guys jacked up his ankle during the morning shoot, and in the afternoon one of the gals knocked her head on the stage and shooting had to halt momentarily. Ever the champ, she got up and finished the night.

Vocal Adrenaline cooling down and chilling out
after take 5 (or 6?) of their Regionals number.

During the different takes, Matt Morrision (Will Schuester) and Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) were in and out of the theatre watching. Sue, along with Josh Groban, Rod Remington (played by the wonderfully spot-on Bill Jones) and Olivia Newton John, serve as celebrity judges for the 2010 Midwest Regional Show Choir Championship. Groban and John weren't there, as they taped their bits the previous Friday.

Throughout the day, we'd hear wild applause and hollering from the balcony, which we quickly figured out meant that one of the actors had gone upstairs to do a meet and greet. (Or alternatively, one of the actors would walk on stage and look up toward the balcony and wave, bringing on more squeals of delight from the fans.)

We sat through roughly 7 takes of the Vocal Adrenaline performance, each with different camera angles, including ones of the audience reactions (keep your eyes open for a really cool audience participation aspect to their number).

Audience members were given fake
programs to hold during the shoot.
Somehow my mom forgot to give hers
back when they collected them at the
end of the night.

They wrapped the scene, and next up was New Directions' performance. Apparently they'd shot most of it the previous Friday, but they did a couple of pick ups, mainly to get the crowd reaction shots. They also filmed two alternate endings, one with New Directions winning Regionals...and one with them not winning.

My guess? After seeing Vocal Adrenaline's performance, I'd be hard pressed to think anyone could beat them. New Directions takes 2nd, but then we find out in the last 37 seconds of the season finale that Vocal Adrenaline somehow cheated and/or both 1st and 2nd advance to Nationals. #cuefinalcredits

Once that was done, they let pretty much all of the cast go for the night. Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) and Monteith stayed behind to film the beginning of New Directions' song set. Much like in "Sectionals" the song starts with the stars behind closed doors.

New Directions anxiously awaiting the
announcement of the winners.

Monteith comes out first (and walked right down our aisle), followed by Michele. Depending on how tight the camera is on him, look for us to his right as he walks down. They did a number of takes with both of them, all at different angles.

After the third take of his entrance, Monteith looked up at the balcony, and said, in reference to the fans up there, "They're still here. That's so rad." What a sweet, nice guy.

A few more shots, and it was a wrap for the night. The cast began scurrying toward the exits, and video village quickly became a ghost town as folks packed up. (Most of the crew had a 6 a.m. call time, and had to turn around the next day at 6 a.m. again. Ugh. I so don't miss those days anymore; it's one of the big reasons I left entertainment.)

As for my mom, she had a blast! Look for us house-right in the crowd dancing scenes and specifically when Finn makes his entrance during the final New Directions number. Speaking of him, on the way out of the theatre, I grabbed a shot with Monteith, who was very sweet and nice. (Charmed x4. Check.) In fact, I'd have to say that overall the moments -- both on-camera and off-camera -- were touching and sweet.

The shoot ended at 11:30 p.m., and by the time my head hit the pillow back hotel it was well into Thursday morning. The day was long, but oh so worth it.

Bonus Blogging (aka, Why My Mom's Out From Jersey)

My mom came out to help me heal from last week's hysterectomy, so I decided to give her a proper Beverly Hills experience. We stayed the night at the Beverly Hilton (where they film the Golden Globes) and I surprised her by taking her to Spagos for lunch.

She was happy because she saw Wolfgang Puck in the kitchen and then saw Paul Anka on the way out. It was an easy cab ride over from there to the Saban Theatre for the taping. Over the years, she's gotten to see some pretty cool things due to my different sports/entertainment gigs (Eagles game box seats, concerts, etc.), so I'm happy she got to experience this shoot with me!

Our Lobster Cobb Salad for lunch and amuse bouche dessert -- they
were so cute, tiny and delicious! -- at Spagos.

On a side note, I just noticed this is post 200 to my blog...kinda cool that it's on this topic!

Me. Bon Jovi. SXSW.

Need I say more? Anyone who knows me knows if you give me a mic and a backing track I'll sing. Pair that with the kick ass South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival and I'm in geek-word-nerd heaven.

Much, much love to @TheJenATX and @KateBuckJr for organizing the fantabulous SXSW TechKaraoke event. These are women to be reckoned with. I dare you to find a person in the Six Lounge who didn't have a blast that night. (If you did, they're either liars or drunk. Or both.)

Here's my favorite song of the night, "These Are Days" by the 10,000 Maniacs (35:21 mark). The response from a gay guy after I finished, "Honey, I closed my eyes and you sounded just like Natalie." Heart-melty moment.

Go to the 13:10 mark for my flat-as-a-pancake version of "Wanted: Dead or Alive." But dammit, I had fun. (As I wasn't allowed to drink during SXSW, my only excuse for butchering my Jersey brethren is "I was sooo tired from all the SXSW non-stop partying conference session attending."

And here's my coworker Anthony doing Bruce Springsteen justice (at the 34:36 mark):

And...me with Train's Drops of Jupiter (0:26 mark) and Anthony again rocking (seriously, the guy has pipes) Prince's Purple Rain (8:53 mark):

OMG: Oh. Em. Glee.

Dear Jesus: Thank you for giving me cancer, so I would be off work and therefore able to go to the season finale taping of Glee tomorrow in Los Angeles. Thank you also for making my mom a nurse, so in the event I faint or need medical assistance at said taping, she can prop me up so I can stay and watch the whole thing.

Yesterday, Fox Publicity sent out the following tweet, asking for folks who wanted to be in the audience for the season finale of Glee (which, presumably, will be the Regionals competition showdown between New Directions and their arch-rival Vocal Adrenaline):

I promptly sent an email with my name, date of birth, and email address, then crossed my fingers, toes, and everything else I have left (couldn't cross my fallopian tubes...don't have 'em anymore) and waited to see if I'd be one of the lucky chosen ones. (I also know someone who knows someone who sent that someone my email as well.)

I just got the confirmation email that I was selected to attend the taping! *squee*

So Mother Kate and I are driving up to Hell-Ay tomorrow morning. We're staying at the Beverly Hills Hilton (I cashed in some gift cards), and plan on taking a taxi to and from the filming location.

I promise to post a full report (well, as much as the NDA will allow) on Thursday!

GleeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeee!

Planning Frugally, Fiscally Fit Vacation

Now that Tax Season is over I'm in the process of planning a little 5-7 day trip for John and I. I'm shooting for end of May, beginning of June.

Question is, where do we go?

We're not quite up for the massive 15 day Australia/New Zealand trip yet, which we were supposed to do in May. Once I got diagnosed with cancer in February, we had to postpone. I want to be reasonably close so I can get home quickly if I need to in case of any odd long-tail complications from the surgery.

So should we do Jamaica, Hawaii, or somewhere else close? I've got some miles I can use on US Air if we travel in the continental US. I've also got a gift certificate for Apple Vacations.

Separation of Church and State

So as to not bore you with surgery updates and cancer stuff, I not going to put those updates here anymore...I'm only going to post about that over on my other blog, Casa DeFrias.

(Teaser: we got the Pathology report back!)

Surgery Went Well

My hysterectomy went very well, and today we dropped off a thank you gift basket to the doctors, nurses and staff who took care of me. It was my first venture out of the house since Monday's operation, and it was nice to get fresh air and some Vitamin D. Now I just have to get used to sitting around the house for another 2 weeks.

Thank god Glee's back.

Review: Hard Rock Hotel (Gaslamp Quarter - San Diego, CA)

Hotel: Hard Rock Hotel
Location: Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego, CA
Rating: 5 stars (out of 5)

The Good: Top-notch service and impeccable, well-thought out design combine to make a five star experience in the heart of the Gaslamp.

The "Meh": The only downside, which the hotel can't control, is the train that chugs by in the middle of the night and blows its considerably loud horn.

In a Nutshell: Perfect for a one night stand!

Studio room bar. (Courtesy of Hard Rock San Diego)

Rock star treatment at check-in by Christian? Check.

Ridiculously big "studio" room? Check.

MaryJane's perfect chocolate malt shake at 1 am? Check.

Relaxed hubby? Priceless.

We visited Hard Rock San Diego on April 9, 2010. The purpose of the trip was to thank my husband for being so awesome through my cancer and IVF treatments, and to get in a tiny staycation before my hysterectomy on Monday.

In short, it's a perfect place for a one-night stand.

Valet

Upon arrival, the very professional, friendly valet staff made us feel welcome right away. They even got some waiting cabs to go around the block so we could move into the valet lane and get out of traffic quickly. Some people may say it's a tad pricey, but as a local I can say it's in line with what most places charge downtown.

Check-in

We were second in line, and checked in within 5 minutes. Props to Christian for his kindness and efficiency in getting us a great room on a high floor with a killer view of the bay.

Room

This is where it gets ridiculous. We booked Hard Rock's smallest room, which they dub a "Studio Room." Now I've traveled a lot (both in the States and international), and I know what a studio room looks like: 6-18 inches between the sides of the bed and wall, a bathroom you can barely turn around in. This hardly fit that bill. The room was overly spacious for 2 adults. They don't overstuff the room with unnecessary furniture. The bar and fridge are smartly tucked in the corner. The large shower easily holds 2 people (and there's no pesky tub to climb over). The bathroom is roomy enough that we were both able to get ready at the same time.

Dining

While we didn't eat at the sushi place (we couldn't, they were booked solid with reservations for the night), we did eat at Mary Janes, the throwback diner, twice. The first time was just a shake with fries/rings combo (get the dipping sauce, it's divine). The next morning we went for breakfast, and the Tijuana Benedict (pork) was inventive and delicious.

Overheard at Mary Janes restaurant during breakfast: Dad, "You really want berries on that?" to which the child replied, "Oh, what do I know, I'm 6."

Final Thoughts

From the moment you walk into the spacious, airy lobby, to when you leave, Hard Rock San Diego embodies the rock star experience.

Mother Kate graces San Diego with her presence

Today's like Christmas Eve! I'm So. Very. Excited. Why? Because tomorrow my mom's coming to town for two whole weeks to help me heal from my surgery.

This is pretty amazing, because Kate doesn't like to get on a plane -- ever -- unless it's taking her to Vegas (though she's been known to bend that rule for Walt Disney World).

Earthquake!

Whoah...the house just shook a lot! First the lights started flickering, then the pictures on the walls started shaking. Next thing I know Xander went from laying down to at my side in the doorway.

First thing I did was turn to Twitter, where it seems everyone was posting. Then I turned to U.S. Geological Service to confirm it was a 6.9 quake.

(Of course, I willed my HDTV from falling over.)
