Idina Sang Happy Birthday...To Me!

Idina Menzel's show at Humphrey's by the Bay in San Diego was amazing last night. Our seats were second row, dead center, but when I purchased them I could have sworn there was another section in front of us. Imagine my surprise when we walked up to see that they actually were second row!

For those of you living under a rock, Idina won a Tony for playing Elphaba in Wicked and also starred as Maureen in the Original Broadway case of Rent. Most recently, she was in the movie Enchanted alongside Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams.

It was funny...about two minutes before she came on, her husband, Taye Diggs, walked out to take his seat. He tried to be all casual, but as soon as they saw him all the female fans began hooting and hollering. Yes, he's more gorgeous in person than on TV/stage if you can believe it.

Last night she was FABULOUS. She did a great mix of songs from her new album, I Stand, and her Broadway days. During the show, she kind of kept a chronological thing going. Idina began by recounting her days as a wedding singer (replete with a god-awful black dress she threw on during this segment), then on to Rent (a hauntingly soaring version of "No Day But Today"), then leading up to Wicked (her encore, of course, was "Defying Gravity").

A few times throughout the show she asked the audience if they had any questions. So, of course, since it was my birthday -- and since I have no shame -- I shouted, "Will you sing 'Happy Birthday' to me?"

She shielded her eyes, looked down, and said, "It's your birthday? What's your name?" I told her, and she said, "Oh, Kara with a C or a K? That's my sister's name!" And then she sang "Happy Birthday" to me! Not, "Hey, audience, let's all sing to her." Nope, just her, to me. The lighting guys put a follow-spot on me so she could see me, then she sang. I nearly died...

Best. Birthday. EVER.

Here's a mish-mash of the video and pictures I took last night. Did I mention she sang to ME?!

And here's her real video if you want to see just how amazing her first single from the new album is:

Thanks, Anonymous with an A. ;-)

I was beyond thrilled.

I'd seen her first in Rent back on Broadway when our college theatre club, Sock 'N Buskin, went; then in Wicked in '04 before she left the cast; and finally in "See What I Wanna See" in NYC. This, however, was...amazing.
